The dessert is named after the city of Nanaimo, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. There are many variations of this speciality which can be found in North America or Europe. Nonetheless, the dessert’s origins are in Canada. The designation „Nanaimo bar“ appears in the Canadian Oxford Dictionary but in no other dictionary. In 1953 the recipe appeared for the first time in Edith Adams‘ prize cookbook. A clipping of this recipe exists in the Nanaimo Museum. The popularity of the dessert is also shown in the fact that the the city’s tourist office has created a Nanaimo Bar Trail brochure and map which guides tourists through the town while having Nanaimo bars in several of the many cafés and stores. Beyond that, there even exists a Nanaimo bar postage stamp. The Nanaimo bar stamp is part of Canada Post’s ‚Sweet Canada‘ stamp collection. A dessert that is so popular must be tasted!
